My name is Nicolas Gruszka. Born in snowy Canada, I grew up in temperate Germany and spend parts of my adult life in sun drenched Australia.

I worked as photographer, graphic designer and website developer for 18+ years. I've learned a lot of small things in all these years. Now I know that big things, on close inspection, are merely countless small things, held together by one big thing.

Read on below if you're still interested in me.

How I photograph

Photography is neither difficult nor simple. Its merely a skill & craft which one can improve till one drops of the planet. No difference to knitting or calligraphy.

There are two aspects to my own photography. Firstly the photographs I create and by which I’m judged by you and secondly the personal experience of having to focus my doubtful mind & actions on one sole subject for a prolonged time. One aspect I print on paper and sell as framed photographs, the other aspect happens more in silence and which I occasionally try to express in words on my blog.

How I photograph. I use one lens only, the 50mm standard focal length for almost all of my images. Why? The 50mm lens leaves little room for excuses. For many years I was to shy & hesitant to get close enough to strangers on the street. My photographs showed this clearly. I didn’t buy a telephoto lens, I simply worked on overcoming my shyness. I learned that most people actually don’t mind so much being photographed by some stranger, but more the fact if the photographer walks off without giving the photographed person the chance to ask for some background information. Photography is 10% technical skill and 80% trial & wow.

How I print & frame my photographs

After many years of photographing, I am still somehow awed by the fact the a camera can slice off a 1/250 second from that insanely vanishing time. Taking a calculator and adding up all my better photos wouldn’t give me more that a couple of seconds of recorded time.

The computer screen helped to free & elevate the photographic print to its true form. While the computer screen is ideal for handling the constant stream of our more mundane photos, the printed static photograph is now free to display a special moment.

How I print my photos? To achieve the highest quality giclee prints and guaranty superior longevity, all my photos are printed on archival acid free professional Hahnemühle and Canson photo paper using pigment based UltraChrome HD inks from Epson. This results in prints with a long life span that can last anywhere from 100 to 200 years without significant fading. I exclusively frame my photographs using the museum standard quality frames made by Halbe.
